George by alex gino6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Born a with penis and given the name George by parents, that heroine is not notably different anatomically from best friend Kelly as far as what is hidden beneath school clothes is concerned. The heroine here is firmly ensconced in the reality of fourth-grade gender conventions and expectations. This is not volume about the intricacies of transgender transitioning relative to hormones, surgery, therapy, cost or any of those aspects which would be expected in a story about a teenager or adult. It may not mirror every trans girl’s experience, but it will certainly hit close to home for most. ![]() Ultimately, whether the edition you read is emblazoned with the name George or Melissa as the title doesn’t matter because either way, the book nails the subject matter. As the saying goes, this story would smell just as sweet by any name. In response to input from the transgender community and a general shift toward more mainstream recognition of and abidance by the rules of naming and pronouns relative to transgender identities, the novel was retitled Melissa for future editions in 2021. ![]() We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own.Īlex Gino’s novel George was first published in 2015. The Institute by Kayla Howarth6/10/2023 ![]() Her puns and dimwitted humour had me giggling a few times and most of the time I didn't know whether to hug her, pat her on the head, or slap her. ![]() There was action from beginning to end, twists around every corner, I spent most of the book accusing every single character of being the bad guy.īut my favourite of all would have to be the character of Olivia. (Yes, you read correctly, I didn't like Harry Potter. Suspected evil teachers.īut there is one big difference between Harry Potter and The Last Sactuary: I actually enjoyed this book. There's the shy one, the smart one and the hopelessly dumb yet hilarious one. The major ones: Three twelve years olds are sent to a new school where magical type things start happening (although in this book, the students are unaware that magic exists). ![]() I'll start off by saying that I don't usually like to compare books, but with 'The Last Sanctuary' it's hard not to notice similarities between it and Harry Potter. ![]()

![]() ![]() Those vague hopes of understanding himself dissolve into a series of encounters that haunt him, and questions that only get harder to answer.Ĭantú punctuates his brutal reminiscences with pointedly detached academic interludes, sketching some of the issues on each side of the border and bringing outside voices to his increasingly unsettled inner monologue. The landscape of the Southwest that was originally his family geography becomes a source of dread, as he tries to make sense of working in an organization that seems to either harden or sink those within it. The Line Becomes a River is caught halfway between memoir and tone poem, as Cantú offers snapshots of his life in and around the Border Patrol. ![]() And like all Cantú's dialogue, it weaves in and out of paragraphs without quotation marks, so nothing interrupts the sense of someone relating a long and terrible dream.Īnd terrible it is. Cleopatra haggard novel6/10/2023 ![]() The story, told from the point of view of the Egyptian priest Harmachis, is recounted in biblical language, being in the form of papyrus scrolls found in a tomb.īoucher and McComas gave the novel a mixed review, saying that it combined "a not always believable portrait" of its title heroine with a "fascinating, wholly convincing" story line. Īs is the case with the majority of Haggard's works, the story draws heavily upon adventure and exotic concepts. Harmachis attempts to use his priestly magic to undermine Cleopatra's rule. The main character Harmachis (the living descendant of the pharaoh's bloodline) is charged by the Priesthood to overthrow the supposed impostor Cleopatra, drive out the Greeks and Romans and restore Egypt to its golden era. The story is set in the Ptolemaic era of Ancient Egyptian history and revolves around the survival of a dynasty bloodline protected by the Priesthood of Isis. Cleopatra mixes historical action with supernatural events, and could be described as a historical fantasy novel. The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum6/9/2023 ![]() I’m going to stop there because this relates to my biggest problem with the book. In The Rosie Effect, Rosie is pregnant and Don is going to be a father. In The Rosie Project we followed the adventures of Don Tillman, a genetics professor (with probable Aspergers) who went looking for a wife and found one in Rosie, who drew him into her own quest to find her unknown biological father. ![]() But if you’re just looking for a yay or nay from me, it is most certainly a HELL NO!Īfter the success of The Rosie Project last year, it was inevitable that we’d get a sequel, though so soon was surprising. ![]() ![]() NOTE: There are spoilers throughout so don’t read this unless you want the book to be spoiled for you (though I would argue it was already spoiled). ![]()
